Meditation is the ability to calm your mind, and to reach the very centre of your Inner-Self, and to let your mind free itself from the everyday pressures and events which surround us.
With the stresses and strains of everyday living, if our mind does not get this opportunity to rest and recuperate, the strains reflect back into our bodies, and we start to suffer from tension, which CAN manifest as neck and back pain, headaches and a permanent sense of tiredness and malaise.
These symptoms are the body's way of telling us to slow down. Although the mind never entirely shuts down, even in sleep, it manages to slow down during this period, much in the same way as the body regenerates after a restful night's sleep.
With meditation you can give the mind the opportunity to slow down, even in a waking state.
This short period of rest enables it to view events from a relaxed and different perspective - often with dramatic results. When our bodies are tired or stressed, the mind also stresses, albeit in a different way.
The Greeks and Romans believed that a sound mind leads to a healthy body, and the converse is also true - An ill body and a tired mind more than likely leads to increased illness and therefore increased mental strain.
With meditation, it is possible to break this cycle, and give our mind a break from the day to day stresses. This in turn allows the body some of the additional strength that it requires to heal itself. It is, along with self-hypnosis, perhaps one of the most valuable life-skills that a person can learn.
With a little practice, meditation can become second nature. You do not have to be a rocket scientist to learn to meditate. In fact, it's so easy to learn that even children can do it. In fact, we recommend that ALL children should be taught the principles of meditation, relaxation and self-hypnosis at an early age to enable them to cope better with the everyday pressures placed upon them by modern living. It is taught as a school subject in some of the Scandinavian countries, and is of particular benefit to children with learning difficulties at school.
With meditation, we not only slow down our minds, but we are able to open our energy centres, or chakras, and this gives us balance and harmony within ourselves.
The mind controls the body, the body does not control the mind, and if we are able to access our Inner Selves and get rid of all negative thoughts and emotions which are part of the human psyche, we have taken the first step to self awareness and inner healing.
The principle of Meditation is a simple one - that of a controlled focus. The mind is given something to focus on, and, as it focuses on that single idea, it distracts itself from everything else. In this state, we have total access to our inner mind, and at this level can eliminate extraneous problems and tap into our powers of self-healing with tremendous effect.
In this heightened state of relaxation, we are able to listen to our Inner Self, and our Higher Mind guides us to listen to our bodies and to pinpoint any potential threat to it. Our Higher mind (some call it our Intuition) can tell us if our energies are out of alignment or if our Energy Centres (Chakras) are out of balance.
Meditation is a powerful healing tool. As we have already stated, meditation helps us to contact our Inner Self. If we make this a way of life, we can control our minds, cut through the clutter and attune ourselves to our true functions and purpose.
By meditating, we can help ourselves to achieve insight into our Higher-Mind and allow our spirituality to grow. In this way, we open ourselves up to the insights of the Universe and its Energies, and are able to tap into the accumulated knowledge and insights which it holds.
The mind is an incredibly powerful tool, and if we allow it unlimited access to negative thoughts and feelings, these feelings will colour our lives and shape our behaviours. In the same way, if we train our minds and spirits to think positive thoughts, these thoughts will, in turn attract more of the same from the unlimited Universal Source.. .
Meditation is a short and simple route to calm the mind and bring you an attunement to the positive energies which exist within each and every one of us.
With meditation we can connect with these positive energies and bring back peace and love into our lives. We can eliminate the negative thoughts and feelings, and enhance the positive. By doing this, we attract True Prosperity, and realise our true potential and Inner Power.
How do I meditate?Meditation is wonderful. You can do it anywhere, any time. All it takes is a little self-discipline to calm the mind and "switch off" for a few minutes from the everyday hustle and bustle.
One of the misconceptions regarding meditation is that it takes a special sort of person, a specific way of life, and a large chunk out of your day.
THIS IS NOT SO!!!!
First thing in the morning or last thing at night are good times to meditate, but, with practice, you can achieve the same results in a lunch break or while waiting for an appointment. All you need is a five minute break.
Although it is easier, initially if you use some relaxing music as background noise, this is not essential. All the music does is help to slow down our thought processes and allow quicker access to our Inner Self and thereby our Higher Minds.
Meditation does not require a special place or time; it only requires a desire to begin.
It can be achieved either sitting in a comfortable position, or by lying down on the floor, comfortably supported by a few pillows. You need five or so minutes without interruption.
Focus on your breathing and relax it. Allow yourself to breathe evenly and deeply, and when you do this, focus on your body, bit by bit, and consciously relax every part of it, beginning at, say the toes and working upwards, or at the scalp and systematically working downwards. The secret is that you mist be AWARE that the specific part is relaxed.
Should you find that your mind begins to wander off at a tangent, don't be distressed and view yourself as a failed meditate- this is perfectly normal initially, and you'll find that the wandering becomes less and less of a problem with practice.
As you breathe and relax, you begin to notice the subtle and powerful rhythms that are evident in your body.
If you detect any negative thoughts and emotions, make a positive affirmation to cancel them. By doing this you train your psyche to react in a positive manner to outside influences.
When you master meditation, you also become aware of any potential warning signs evident in your body.
To end a period of meditation, it is equally simple. All you have to do is bring your mind back to focus on your body, piece by piece, breathing slowly and evenly.
Mentally give thanks for the opportunity you have afforded yourself and give yourself a mental hug for allowing yourself to be good to yourself.
After you have done this bring yourself back to reality, slowly allowing your mind to start thinking again.
Meditation can also be used to help with any unsolved problems that you may have in your life. These problems need not only be problems of a physical or material nature, but can also be problems that stem from an emotional source.
Before you enter into your meditative state, focus on the problem and then ask your Higher Mind to help come up with answers.
Enter meditation and after you have finished, see if you receive any solutions or insights that could help you. Because your conscious mind has been on hold, your subconscious mind has been working on the problems uncluttered by negative thoughts and emotions that may be present in your conscious and waking state.
You will be amazed at the new perspectives that you have gained on your everyday problems by taking this break, as well as at how calm and relaxed you feel.
